Stud Measurements: Avoid This Common Mistake!

Stud Measurements: Avoid This Common Mistake!

When purchasing threaded studs for a construction project, do you know which type of measurement meets your requirements? There are two common industry measurements for studs, ‘end-to-end’ and ‘first-to-first.’ An ‘end-to-end’ measurement literally measures the overall length of the stud. Conversely, a ‘first-to-first’ measurement excludes the ends of a stud beyond its threaded area. Not specifying the correct type of measurement can lead to ¼” to ½” variance on  its length.

Why does this matter? It’s important to have accurate stud lengths because having too much exposed thread is a waste of material and money. Alternatively, having too little exposed thread means nuts cannot achieve their proper clearance and tension. All of this can lead to a failed inspection when these fasteners arrive at your job site!
